U.S. President Barack Obama has called Pakistan's president to express his condolences over a NATO airstrike that killed 24 Pakistani troops last week.

In a telephone call Sunday, Mr. Obama said the incident was regrettable and not a deliberate attack on Pakistan. The president reiterated the U.S. commitment to a full investigation into the November 26 incident. He said the relationship with Pakistan is critical to the security of both nations.

The November 26 incident, which occurred near the Afghan border, sparked anger in Pakistan prompting the nation to back out of Monday's conference on the future of Afghanistan.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton earlier called Pakistan's prime minister to offer condolences.
