Palestinian medical sources say two Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least one civilian and wounded more than 10 others early Friday. The air strikes targeted Palestinian militants, including a Hamas training camp.

The Israeli military confirmed the air raids, saying they were in response to rockets fired deep into southern Israel by Palestinian gunmen late Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, an Israeli air strike killed two Gaza militants who Israel said were planning to infiltrate Israel and carry out attacks.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum accused Israel of ratcheting up violence in the area, saying the group holds the Israeli government fully responsible for the new escalation.

Hamas, an Islamist group sworn to destroy Israel, has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007. An Israeli army statement said one of the militants killed was involved in planning a suicide bombing in the southern Israeli resort of Eilat in 2007.
