Afghan President Hamid Karzai has condemned night raids conducted by NATO-led coalition forces and has called for them to be stopped.
In a statement Sunday, Mr. Karzai said a raid in southeastern Paktia province a day earlier struck the home of a senior counter-narcotics official and not the targeted leader of the Haqqani militant network.
The raid left a female relative dead and four others wounded.
The statement said the top NATO commander General John Allen apologized for the incident. But the French News Agency quoted a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force as saying “no apology was made, but an investigation is under way.”
General Allen also joined President Karzai in condemning Saturday's assassination of Abdul Baqi Raghbat in southern Kandahar province. Raghbat was an adviser to the Ministry of Tribal and Border Affairs. Allen said “Raghbat played an instrumental role in advancing many areas of Afghan society and made a difference to the people of Afghanistan.”
