U.S. President Barack Obama has announced an additional $113 million in emergency aid to the Horn of Africa, where recent droughts and famine have killed tens of thousands of people.

In a statement issued Thursday, the U.S. president said more than 13 million of people in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia remain in urgent need of humanitarian assistance as a result of the worst drought the region has seen in 60 years.

The new aid is in addition to $870 million the U.S. already has provided, and it will be used for food, health, shelter, water and other needs.

Mr. Obama said the heartbreaking accounts from the region remind us of our common humanity and the need to reach out to people in need.
