Powerful Earthquake Rocks Japan, No Danger of Tsunami

Seismologists say a powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 rocked southern Japan Sunday, but there were no reports of damage or casualties, and no tsunami warning was issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the epicenter of the quake in the Izu islands, 486 kilometers south of Tokyo. The quake struck at a depth of 371 kilometers.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said quake struck at 2:28 in the afternoon and caused buildings to sway in Tokyo.

Northeastern Japan was devastated on March 11 by a massive earthquake and tsunami that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing.
