Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir say security forces have opened fire on hundreds of demonstrators protesting winter power cuts, killing one person and wounding two other people.

The shooting took place Monday outside the office of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation in the Boniyar area of the Baramulla district.

Power company officials have recently announced electricity blackouts for the Himalayan region, despite bitterly cold winter temperatures.
