Poll results in Germany show that a slight majority of Germans want embattled President Christian Wulff to stay in office, despite a scandal over an undisclosed financial loan.

The public broadcaster ARD reported Friday that 56 percent of the respondents said they want to keep the president despite his failure to report a private loan from the wife of a wealthy businessman, and alleged attempts to kill a news report by the Bild newspaper on the subject.

The $600,000 home loan was given to President Wulff while he served as governor of Lower Saxony state.

He apologized last month for taking the loan, saying he should have disclosed it before becoming president.
