Police in the southern Philippines say gunmen have shot and killed a radio broadcaster and newspaper publisher as he drove in his car with his wife and daughter.

Authorities say 41-year-old Christopher Guarin was attacked late Thursday by two unidentified men on a motorcycle in the southern port city of General Santos. Police said his wife received a minor wound, while their nine-year-old daughter was unharmed.

Police said Guarin had been receiving death threats and had read the threatening messages on his evening radio show.

He is the first journalist to be killed this year in a country that is notorious for the murders of people in the media.

The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines says about 150 journalists have been killed in the country since 1986.
