Hundreds of protesters affiliated with the Occupy movement are gathering outside the U.S. Capitol Tuesday to “Occupy Congress.”
The protesters braved cold, damp weather to cluster outside barricades in front of the Capitol, chanting “We are the 99 percent.” Scores of police officers blocked them from moving onto the Capitol steps, and police arrested at least one person.
The Occupy movement began in New York in September under the name Occupy Wall Street. Participants say they represent the “99 percent” – those outside the top one percent of wealth holders.
Organizers of Tuesday's Occupy Congress event say they “came to show the one percent Congress what democracy looks like.” Unlike some past Occupy events in Washington, the protesters seemed ready to confront police, yelling “let's be revolutionaries.”
The protest was timed to coincide with the House of Representatives' first day back after its winter recess.
