Reports from Pakistan say security forces have killed at least 20 militants and wounded dozens of others after coming under attack in the country's northwest.

The reports say the fighting in the remote mountainous Kurram tribal region took place early Thursday, and that 22 troops were wounded in the attack.

The death toll could not be independently confirmed because the fighting occurred in an area that is off-limits to journalists.

In a separate incident Thursday, Pakistani officials said Iranian security forces killed six Pakistani men in the border region of insurgency-hit southwestern Baluchistan province, which also borders Afghanistan.

It is not clear what provoked the shooting.

Earlier this month, Pakistani border guards detained three Iranian security personnel after they crossed into the country in the Mazah Sar area of Baluchistan province and tried to take two Pakistani nationals back into Iran. Both men were wounded in the incident and one later died of his injuries.
