Police in the Indian capital, New Delhi, said Tuesday a massive fire in the densely populated Ghazipur area destroyed nearly 500 dwellings.
Fire officials said the fire broke out early morning and quickly spread. They said it took 20 fire trucks and several water tanks to contain the blaze. No fatalities have been reported and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
The police have set up temporary camps in the area for the homeless slum dwellers and have been providing food, medicine and other necessities.
In 2010, the same slum had witnesses a huge fire after a high voltage electricity line fell on it, gutting more than 100 dwellings.
