The U.S. Geological Survey says a 6.8-magnitude earthquake has hit the central Philippines, killing a child.

The Survey says the quake struck Monday just before noon, north of the city of Dumaguete on Negros Island at a depth of 46 kilometers.

The chief of the Office of Civil Defense said one child died when a concrete wall collapsed on Negros. He said residents felt the earthquake in the cities of Cebu and San Carlos where windows were broken by the shaking.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami warning, but the local Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has issued an alert.
