Pakistani officials say a suspected U.S. drone strike has killed 10 people in the country's northwest tribal region near the border with Afghanistan.

Officials say two missiles hit a compound suspected of belonging to militants in the North Waziristan tribal area Wednesday. Security officials say the dead included some foreign and local militants.

Pakistan has publicly condemned drone strikes as a violation of its sovereignty, although they are believed to be carried out with the help of Pakistani intelligence.

In November, a cross-border NATO air attack killed 24 Pakistani soldiers prompting Islamabad to close NATO supply routes into Afghanistan, further damaging ties with the U.S.

The Pakistan army says it is meeting Wednesday with NATO and Afghan military officials for talks aimed at improving security along the (Pakistan-Afghan) border.

Pakistan has recently signaled that it may soon re-open the supply routes.
