Japanese Emperor Akihito went into surgery Saturday for scheduled heart bypass surgery.

The Imperial Household Agency says a medical team from the University of Tokyo Hospital, joined by another team from Juntendo University Hospital were operating on the 78-year-old emperor.

The hospital said the surgery should take about five hours. It was scheduled after tests last week showed that Mr. Akihito's heart condition had worsened over the past year.
