U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich, a two-time candidate for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, has lost his bid for re-election in Ohio.

Kucinich was defeated by fellow Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a primary contest made necessary when the Republican-controlled Ohio legislature redrew the state's congressional map after the 2010 census and merged the two lawmaker's districts. Kucinich briefly considered running for an open House seat in Washington state .

The 65-year-old Kucinich is a former mayor of Cleveland, Ohio who has served eight terms in Congress. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 after gaining attention for his stance against U.S.-led war in Iraq, and again in 2008.

In the November general election Kaptur will fate the winner of the Republican primary, Samuel “Joe” Wurzelbacher, who became known as “Joe the Plumber” during the 2008 presidential campaign after he asked then-candidate Barack Obama a question about taxes.
