French President Nicolas Sarkozy says France could suspend its membership in the European Union's visa-free Schengen zone if progress is not made on controlling illegal immigration in Europe.
The president also suggested that France implement a law requiring governments to purchase products made within the European Union, similar to the “Buy American Act.”
Mr. Sarkozy made the pledge and legislation pitch Sunday during a campaign rally north of Paris. Recent polls suggest that the conservative leader is trailing behind Socialist Francois Holland in the vote to be held late April and early May.
