Police in Montenegro say they have detained a man suspected of severely beating a journalist last week in an attack that has drawn international condemnation.

Police said Tuesday the reporter, Olivera Lakic, identified a 29-year-old man as the attacker. He was arrested late Monday.

Lakic, a journalist with the daily newspaper Vijesti, was hospitalized with head injuries after the attack outside of her home Wednesday in the capital, Podgorica.

She had received threats after reporting on counterfeit cigarette production in the country.

Lakic says she is temporarily quitting journalism because of fear for her safety.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe last week condemned the attack, saying it was not an isolated case. The OSCE said reporters from Vijesti, and particularly Lakic, were previously threatened for their reporting about the tobacco plant.
