The French government has approved a new set of anti-terrorism measures following a string of deadly shootings by an Islamist extremist in southern France last month.

The Cabinet on Wednesday authorized a bill making it illegal to visit websites that encourage terrorism as well as travel anyplace for terrorism training.

“Any individual that will regularly consult without legitimate reason websites that induce terrorism, or praise it, and that carry images of terrorist acts and offences against life will from now on be punished. The proposal also says that any French citizen that resides on French territory and travels abroad to attends programmes of ideological indoctrination that lead to terrorism and/or enlist into training camps can be prosecuted and criminally charged upon his return to France. ”

The new measure must be approved by parliament before it is implemented.

Alleged gunman Mohamed Merah killed three soldiers, a rabbi and three Jewish children during a shooting spree last month in the southern city of Toulouse.
