The U.S. Geological Survey says a huge earthquake has struck off the northern coast of Indonesia, sparking a tsunami warning in the Indian Ocean.

The quake, which was given a magnitude of 8.7, hit about 500 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh, the provincial capital and largest city in the province of Aceh. The massive quake that struck Japan last year was a magnitude 9.0.
