U.S. President Barack Obama said Wednesday that his Republican rivals are trying to help the wealthiest Americans rather than spend money to help the middle class.

Mr. Obama told an audience at a campaign stop at a community college in the Midwestern state of Ohio that he wants to ensure tax fairness for all, while Republicans want a budget that “showers the wealthiest Americans” with more tax cuts.

The president said that his economic plan would continue to help community colleges train people to learn the skills businesses are looking for in potential employees. Prior to his speech, Mr. Obama met with students who are training for new jobs.

Leading Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney says he wants to create more jobs and reduce the federal budget deficit by measures that include lowering the corporate income tax rate to 25 percent and cutting non-security discretionary spending by five percent.

Ohio is considered a battleground state in this year's presidential election.
