U.S. officials say the four NATO troops who were killed in Thursday's helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan were American.

The Black Hawk helicopter went down in Helmand province during bad weather as the coalition responded to a suicide attack. U.S. military officials confirmed Friday that those killed were U.S. troops.

Earlier, NATO coalition spokesman Lt. Commander James Williams told VOA it is “unlikely” that the helicopter was brought down by enemy fire, and that the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Last month, a NATO helicopter crash in Kabul province killed 12 Turkish soldiers on board and four people on the ground. Authorities said it was an accident.
