Afghan officials say a suicide bomb attack on a government compound in the western province of Farah has killed at least seven people and wounded 12 others.

Interior ministry and police officials say four attackers stormed the provincial compound Thursday, setting off explosives and engaging in an extended gunbattle with police. Six policemen and one civilian were killed. The four attackers also died.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack, which comes in the wake of the Taliban militants announcing their annual spring offensive earlier this month.

NATO troops have already transferred security control of large portions of Afghanistan to local authorities. All foreign combat troops are scheduled to leave the country by the end of 2014.
