A suicide bomber disguised as a woman wearing a burqa blew himself up in a market in eastern Afghanistan Saturday, killing four French NATO service members and wounding five.

A statement from the office of French President Francois Hollande says three of the wounded are in serious condition.

President Hollande dispatched Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to Afghanistan following the attack.

Afghan officials say the attack happened in Kapisa province, where the majority of soldiers are French.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying both French and Afghan forces suffered casualties.

Mr. Hollande announced last month France will withdraw most of its troops in Afghanistan by the end of the year, two years ahead of the timetable agreed by NATO.

The Kapisa bombing was the second deadly attack on NATO troops Saturday. Earlier, NATO reported that one of its service members was killed in a bomb blast.
