Pakistani officials say gunmen have killed seven security personnel at a temporary army encampment in the generally peaceful province of Punjab.

Authorities say an unknown number of gunmen killed six soldiers and a policeman early Monday. Three other policemen were wounded.

The attack took place as thousands of protesters were passing through the area on the way to the capital, Islamabad, to protest the re-opening of NATO supply routes into Afghanistan.

The camp was set up to search for a missing pilot and the debris of a helicopter that crashed in the area recently.
