Afghanistan's president has condemned a suicide bombing at a wedding reception in a northern province that killed 17 people, revising earlier reports that the attack had killed at least 20 people.
President Hamid Karzai said that among those killed in the attack Saturday in Samangan province were Ahmad Khan Samangani, who was a member of parliament, and General Mohammad Khan, Samangan's provincial intelligence director. A member of parliament, a police commander, and a former provincial governor were also injured in the attack.
The president has appointed a delegation to launch an investigation into the terrorist attack.
Mr. Karzai said “the enemies of Afghanistan once again targeted innocent civilians.”
The wedding ceremony for Samangani's daughter was being held in the provincial capital of Aybak.
Authorities say the suicide bomber entered the wedding hall and embraced Samangani before blowing himself up.
Also Saturday, NATO says a service member was killed in an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan.
