The U.N. refugee agency says the number of Somalis who have fled their country has surpassed 1 million.

A spokesman says the latest data show most of the refugees have fled to neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia.

The most recent arrivals — like previous ones — cite continued unrest and food shortages in Somalia.

However, the outflow of refugees has slowed. The U.N. registered 30,000 new arrivals in the first six months of 2012, compared to 130,000 at the same point in 2011.

The drought situation in Somalia has improved and the militant group al-Shabab has lost much of its territory over the past year.

The U.N. agency is concerned fighting will increase again as the country tries to install a more permanent government next month.
