Omar Suleiman, Egypt's longtime intelligence chief and a top aide to ousted president Hosni Mubarak has died. He was 76.

Egypt's official MENA news agency said Suleiman died early Thursday at a hospital in the United States, but did not give further details. An aide said he was undergoing tests at a facility in Cleveland.

Suleiman was appointed vice president during the revolt last year against Mr. Mubarak's rule, after serving as intelligence chief for nearly two decades.

He attempted to run in the country's recent presidential election, but was disqualified after failing to get enough signatures to back his bid.
