The son of Pakistan's ousted prime minister has been elected to parliament.

Abdul Qadir Gilani of the Pakistan People's Party won a by-election Thursday, beating out his closest rival by a little more than 4,000 votes.

He was elected to the seat left vacant last month when the Supreme Court ruled his father, the former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, ineligible to hold office because he refused to pursue corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Last week, the Supreme Court ordered new Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to reopen the corruption cases against Mr. Zardari and to submit a report by July 25.
