The gunman who allegedly killed 12 people and wounded 58 others in a Colorado movie theater is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday.

Prison authorities are keeping James Holmes in solitary confinement in Aurora, Colorado, near Denver.

Holmes is accused of tossing tear gas into the theater during a midnight screening of the new Batman film The Dark Night Rises, before shooting at the audience. Police arrested him in the parking lot without a fight.

After meeting privately in Aurora with the victims' families on Sunday, President Barack Obama said he came to them not as a president but as a father and a husband. He said words are inadequate, but that everyone understands what it would be like to lose someone in this way.

Mr. Obama assured the families that a brighter day will come out of the darkness and that the entire country is thinking about them.

The president and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney are temporarily keeping their campaign commercials off Colorado television, out of respect for the victims.

Little is known about Holmes or his motives other than he is a former Ph.D. student in neuroscience. Police recovered his computer from his apartment, which Holmes had rigged with 60 explosive devices set up to kill anyone who entered.
