The U.S. women's gymnastics team has won an Olympic gold medal for the first time since 1996.

In the fourth day of the London games Tuesday, the U.S. team lived up to its potential with a score of 183.596, five points ahead of silver-medal winner Russia.

Romania took the bronze.

The win provided some consolation for U.S. gymnast Jordyn Wieber, the world champion who missed out Sunday on a spot in the Olympic all-around final.

Later Tuesday, American Michael Phelps could become the first male swimmer to win a gold medal in the same event in three straight Olympic games when he competes in the 200-meter butterfly.

A medal would also tie him with former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina for first on the all-time Olympic list with 18 career medals.

China and the United States are far ahead in the medal count at the London Olympics.
