Gunmen in Ivory Coast have killed at least five people during an attack on an army base in Abidjan.

The attack came a day after unidentified assailants attacked an army post and police camp in a different part of the city, killing five soldiers.

The latest attack took place early Monday at the Akouedo army camp. Authorities say heavily armed gunmen seized weapons and fled after an intense firefight with soldiers.

Armed forces later set up roadblocks and began patrolling parts of the city.

Large numbers of illegal weapons continue to circulate in Ivory Coast, following post-election violence last year that killed about 3,000 people.

The government of President Alassane Ouattara has been trying to integrate fighters loyal to former president Laurent Gbagbo, who refused to give up power after losing the 2010 presidential election.

Gbagbo is now awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court on war crimes charges.
