Torrential rains have pounded the Philippine capital of Manila, flooding half the city, triggering a deadly landslide and forcing more than 250,000 people to flee their homes.

Monsoon rains left floodwaters neck-deep in some parts of Manila, where residents Tuesday piled into rescue boats while others watched from rooftops.

The landslide, in a northern suburb of the city, killed at least eight people.

The area has seen sustained rains since last week when Typhoon Saola battered the region. More than 50 people have been killed in the past week.

The flooding is the worst the Philippines has seen in three years, and forecasters expect the rains to continue through at least Wednesday.
