Torrential rains have pounded the already soaked Philippine capital of Manila and surrounding areas, triggering a deadly landslide and sending tens of thousands of people to leave their homes for shelters.

The monsoon rains left floodwaters neck-deep in some parts of Manila, where residents piled into rescue boats while others watched from rooftops. The flooding closed schools, government offices and businesses.

The area has seen sustained rains since last week when Typhoon Saola battered the region. More than 50 people have been killed.

Weather authorities say more rain is on the way.
