London's Heathrow Airport is grappling with its busiest days ever as thousands of athletes and fans return home at the end of the Olympic Games.
Airport officials said 116,000 people are expected to leave from Heathrow on Monday, compared with 95,000 for an average day at the airport.
British pop stars rocked out the closing ceremony late Sunday, titled “A Symphony of British Music.” Artists George Michael, the Spice Girls, Annie Lennox, and the Pet Shop Boys performed during the three-hour celebration in front of 80,000 spectators.
British Prime Minister David Cameron gave a glowing assessment of the event. ” We showed the world what we're made of, we reminded ourselves what we can do.”
The United States was the games' top winner with 104 medals, followed by China. During the closing ceremony, London handed over the reins to Rio de Janeiro, host city for the 2016 games.
