Police in the U.S. state of Texas say multiple people have been shot near Texas A&M University.

A police spokeswoman told CNN that law enforcement officers were among those shot. Few details about the shooting were immediately available including how many causalities there are.

Texas A&M University says police have taken the shooter into custody.

The university had issued a warning on its website Monday afternoon saying an active shooter was near the campus football stadium. It urged people to avoid the area.

The shooting comes after two recent high profile shootings in the United States. On July 20, a gunman in Colorado opened fire at a movie theatre, killing 12 people. Two weeks later, seven people, including the gunman, were killed in a shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.
