Reports from Mexico quote officials as saying police were pursuing suspected criminals, and mistook the vehicle carrying the two Americans.

The two were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

The Americans were riding in a vehicle with diplomatic plates when they came under fire on a highway leading to the city of Cuernavaca. There are conflicting reports about their identity.
