A powerful typhoon with winds of up to 215 kilometers per hour is headed for southern Japan and expected to hit the southern islands on Sunday afternoon.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Saturday that Typhoon Bolaven is expected to bring torrential rain and strong winds to the islands in Okinawa prefecture on Sunday.

Forecasters say that after hitting Okinawa, Bolaven is expected to sweep across the Korean Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday.
