The U.S. military says it is disciplining troops in Afghanistan who were involved in burning Qurans and urinating on the corpses of Taliban insurgents.

The Defense Department said Monday it has given administrative punishments to six Army soldiers and three Marines.

The exact punishments were not disclosed, but could include demotions or docked pay. No criminal charges have been issued in either incident.

In one of the incidents, a video was posted on the Internet earlier this year showing Marines urinating on Taliban corpses while some of them made jokes.

In the other incident, NATO troops stationed at Bagram Air Base attempted to dispose of copies of Qurans by setting them on fire. That event in February sparked violence across Afghanistan that led to 30 deaths.

U.S. President Barack Obama apologized for the incident.
