A strong earthquake has struck under the sea near the Philippines, prompting a tsunami warning for the region.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Friday's 7.6 magnitude quake was centered to the east of the Philippines, about 96 kilometers from the town of Sulangan. It initially said the quake had a magnitude of 7.9.

Philippine officials have urged people living in the eastern Samar region to evacuate to higher ground.

Tsunami warnings are in effect for Indonesia, the Philippines and Palau, but earlier warnings were lifted for Japan, Taiwan and several Pacific islands.
