A magnitude 7.9 earthquake has struck under the sea near the Philippines, prompting a tsunami warning for the region.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Friday's undersea quake was centered to the east of the Philippines, about 140 kilometers from Samar province.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Officials issued tsunami warnings for the Philippines and Indonesia, but earlier warnings were lifted for Japan, Taiwan and several Pacific islands.
