Turkish officials say at least 39 people have drowned after a boat carrying illegal immigrants struck rocks and sank in waters off western Turkey.

Two local officials said they expect the death toll to rise as more bodies are discovered.

Forty-five people were reported rescued after the incident, and two people have been arrested.

It is not clear where the would-be immigrants were from. Turkey is a popular crossing point for people wishing to migrate into the European Union.
