The United States has removed the Communist Party of Nepal from its list of terrorist organizations.

The State Department announced the move Thursday, saying the party is “no longer engaged in terrorist activity that threatens the security of U.S. nationals or U.S. foreign policy.”

Nepal's Maoist rebels carried out a decade-long insurgency that claimed more than 13,000 lives.

The communists agreed to enter Nepal's political arena in 2006 and won elections two years later, but have struggled to govern in a coalition.
