The United States has removed the Communist Party of Nepal from its list of terrorist organizations.

The move was announced by the State Department, which said the communists had taken steps to dismantle their terrorist apparatus.

The decade-long Maoist insurgency claimed more than 13,000 lives.

The communists agreed to enter Nepal's political arena in 2006 and won elections two years later, but have struggled to govern in a coalition.
