Violent weather tore across the hot and humid northeastern United States Saturday, bringing torrential rains, knocking out power, and producing a rare tornado on New York City.

The twister touched down on the borough of Queens, startling residents who ran for safety as soon as they realized what was happening.

The tornado overturned cars, blew down trees, and damaged homes. No injuries are reported. The storm forced officials to postpone the women's finals at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York.

Severe thunderstorms stretched from New England to North Carolina Saturday. The same weather front brought strong storms to the midwestern U.S. Friday, killing four people.
