Police in Kenya's capital have seized a supply of suicide vests, weapons and ammunition and arrested two Somali nationals who were allegedly planning to use them in a terrorist attack.

Nairobi Deputy Provincial police officer Moses Ombati said Friday the supplies and suspects were found in an overnight raid on an apartment in the Eastleigh district, known as “Little Mogadishu.”

“Obviously these are al-Shabab activities, the Kenyans should know, these are al-Shabab activities, terrorism activities, they use such items.”

Police say they found six explosive vests, four AK-47 assault rifles, ammunition and several grenades that were to be used by suspected al-Shabab militants in what they said was a “major” terrorist attack.

The Somali-based insurgent group has claimed a series of grenade attacks, explosions and shootings in neighboring Kenya since it sent troops into Somalia to defeat the al-Qaida-linked fighters.
