Witnesses say protesters have stormed the German embassy in Sudan's capital and torn down the German flag.

Initial reports from Khartoum say the protesters broke into the embassy Friday afternoon, and that part of the facility is on fire.

U.S. embassies across the Middle East have been targeted by mobs this week. This is the first major protest of the week targeting a Western embassy in sub-Saharan Africa.

An employee of the U.S. embassy in Khartoum says the situation at that location is quiet. The employee told VOA that the embassy is being protected by more than 200 Sudanese police.
