The Taliban has claimed responsibility for an attack on a British military base in Afghanistan that killed two U.S. Marines.

A spokesman for the militant group said Saturday the attack was in response to a film produced in the United States that insults the Prophet Muhammad, and because Britain's Prince Harry is serving at the base.

NATO says militants infiltrated Camp Bastion in Helmand province late Friday and attacked the facility using small arms, rockets and suicide bombers.

The coalition says 18 militants died in the attack and one was wounded and captured. Several international troops were wounded.

Officials say Prince Harry, who is third in line to the British throne, was never in danger. He is deployed at the base as a helicopter pilot. The Taliban has vowed to kill him.

In a separate attack, Afghan officials say 12 people were killed by a roadside bomb in Helmand province Friday. The victims included women and children.
