The African Union's Kenyan forces continued their advance on the Somali port town of Kismayo as rebel forces appear to leave the area.

African Union forces were just 40 kilometers west of the city, Tuesday, while rebel fighters were reportedly fleeing ahead of their advance.

A spokesman for a pro-government militia said there were currently no al-Shabab fighters in front of troops positioned at the city's defensive line.

Witnesses say the rebels have reportedly stopped broadcasts on their local radio station, Radio Andalus, dismantling it and leaving town with the equipment.

An official with the United Nation Refugee agency told VOA that up to 4,600 people have been displaced this month in Kismayo, with 2,000 fleeing since Sunday.

The UNHCR says many have been fleeing skirmishes in and around the city and ahead of any further possible fighting.
