Emergency officials in Nepal have suspended their search for climbers missing after a deadly avalanche on the world's eighth-highest mountain.

Officials said at least two French climbers were still unaccounted for late Monday. At least nine people were killed Sunday on Mount Manaslu when it was hit by a wall of snow in one of the worst tragedies in Himalayan mountaineering in recent years.

Several people were rescued and taken by helicopter to the base camp. Some climbers sustained injuries.

The avalanche hit early Sunday while the hikers were asleep in their tents.

Local officials said seven French climbers were among the 11 victims. Two German climbers and one each from Spain and Nepal also died.
