Emergency officials in Nepal say several people are still missing Monday following a deadly avalanche on the world's eighth-highest mountain.

At least nine people were killed Sunday on Mount Manaslu when it was hit by a wall of snow in one of the worst tragedies in Himalayan mountaineering in recent years. Several people were rescued and taken by helicopter to the base camp. Some climbers sustained injuries.

Rescue helicopters flew over the slopes Monday looking for climbers that were still lost.

The Associated Press reports the avalanche hit early Sunday while the hikers were asleep in their tents.

Local officials said most of those killed were French and that other climbers were from Italy, Germany and Spain.
